International Literacy Conference to the Rescue

Teacher Professional Development: I need a trip to the International Literacy Conference in St. Louis to learn about current trends in literacy that can be applied to improve learning. <profdevpilot>

My Students

What is the best way to learn about new ideas and trends in the field of literacy? By talking to lots of people in that field. The International Literacy Conference in St. Louis would provide me the opportunity to talk and discuss with leaders in the field of literacy about ideas to bring back.

My students are young, but as a teacher, we never really know what they are capable of learning or doing until we meet them.

With the constant changes and common core related activities happening throughout the country, we never know what is the "correct" thing to do in our classroom to help our kids. I am like any teacher, trying to provide the best learning opportunity for my students. I love literacy and try to instill this love in my students. They love to read and can sit and enjoy a really long story. They have started to have in-depth conversations in class, where they are starting to use inference and real life experiences to make connections to the story they are reading about. This International Literacy Conference would provide resources and inspiration that I would need to make a positive impact in my students' lives. I would gain practical, research-based professional development from literacy luminaries from over 300+ sessions in different areas of literacy.

My Project

This professional development opportunity would help me to identify ways I can improve practices for the English Learner. I will be able to participate in exercises that will increase English learners' success at school and communicate with parents as partners who contribute to their children's education. My students may come in not knowing their letters, but leave ready to read. Trying to help beginner readers is always a challenge. One of the workshops would help to demonstrate an understanding of efficient and effective decoding activities that are multi-sensory and simultaneously develop phonemic awareness skills of segmenting, manipulating, and blending; phonics knowledge; decoding strategies for basic and advanced phonics knowledge; and high frequency word recognition. I would be able to bring these concepts and learning strategies back to the classroom and help my students become the best learners they can be, ready to read on their own.

This professional development opportunity would provide me with a lot of resources, activities, strategies and new inventive ideas to bring back to the classroom where I can help my students learn to read and use different strategies that would make them successful.
