My Project

My students are unique and special in that this is my first year to have them all (PreK-3rd grade) for music. We are a small, rural school that has not had a consistent elementary music program for several years. In my class (I call it SPARK: songs, performances, art, rhythm, and kinesthetics), we have been working on reading rhythms, notes, dynamics, and doing a lot of movement activities. My focus has been to include literacy in every aspect of singing, dancing, and performing. My students love getting to play instruments, sing folk songs, and do dances to new music.

Coming from the regular classroom to music, I notice that COVID-19 has impacted their attention spans and attendance.

There seems to be more issues with focusing, listening, and staying on task. I think that parents got used to pulling their child every time that they had a sniffle and it continues today. Since so little time was spent on actual school work during the pandemic, parents do not see the importance of classroom attendance today. I know that technology plays a big role in the attention issues, too.

The items that I am requesting will hopefully keep kids engaged in learning. They will provide hands-on learning experiences. When kids are engaged and like what they are doing, their attendance will also improve. Many of the items will help promote literacy in the music classroom.
