Interdisciplinary Project on the Vietnam War Requires Books!
The cost of this proposal for 85 copies of the book "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien that will serve as the literary component in an interdisciplinary unit on the Vietnam War is $1593, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English at a small public high school in the South Bronx, and one of the benefits of our small size is that teachers can work collaboratively to help our students see how what they learn in one class relates to what they are learning in their other subjects – and in the rest of their lives.
The eleventh-grade history teacher and I have been working together to create an interdisciplinary unit on the Vietnam War. The students would read Tim O'Brien's book, "The Things They Carried," along with related poetry and songs, as well as articles about both the Vietnam war and the current war in Iraq. However, we lack a class set of the Tim O'Brien book! I am asking for funding to purchase enough copies of "The Things They Carried" so that each of our students will have one copy to read during the time that they're studying the Vietnam War in their history classes.
Approximately 85 students will be participating in the unit this year. Our goal is to help our students see that reading literature can help them understand what happened in the past, while providing a lense through which to view what is happening today. Also, we hope that they will begin to analyze the modern world through the same critical lens they use when studying history and literature.
