Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My English language learners enter the classroom each day eager to learn how to read, write, and speak English. They are motivated, loving, deserving children who could greatly benefit from an interactive whiteboard to help illustrate the vocabulary and grammar we are teaching.
I teach English as a second language at an elementary school in South Philadelphia.
Our school population is 100% economically disadvantaged and 40% English language learners. Our students come from all over the world, Nepal, Vietnam, China, Burma, Cambodia, Mexico, Central America, and of course, South Philadelphia. Key School provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich educationally, and grow as positive social contributors in our world. We have excellent parent participation and involvement, although most of our parents do not speak English. We use extensive resources to communicate with our parents in their native language. Our students' parents are driven to help their children learn English and succeed in their new home. They aspire to achieve and live the American Dream. However, due to the Philadelphia School Districts' financial crisis, ALL of our educational supplies and materials are limited or non-existent.
My Project
The interactive whiteboard and projector will rapidly progress my students' acquisition of English. Currently, we have a small whiteboard that is difficult for students in the back of the classroom to see. I am constantly relying on my own drawings, photographs, and my own acting ability to explain the meaning of English vocabulary words, concepts, and grammar lessons. Currently, we are teaching a unit on elephants. I like to introduce each unit with a short video about the topic. We all crowd around my laptop and 32 students try to get a glimpse of the screen. The projector could eliminate this problem. For our writing and speaking practice I draw a word bank of terms that children could use to express what they've learned (trunk, tusks, mammals). The Internet could provide photographs that would accurately define these terms without confusion. The whiteboard would allow students to participate in a safari to Africa- videos, animals sounds and sights at their fingertip.
Your donations will provide technology that will fully engage students in a multisensory, hands-on English language learning experience.
The students will be able to physically interact with the whiteboard during lessons, which improves memory retention and motivation. This technology will provide an extraordinary opportunity for my students to learn English and in turn, fulfill the dreams of their parents and themselves. Every young immigrant deserves a better life - bring hope to their journey
