Interactive Use of iPads in Speech Therapy

My Students

“A person’s a person’s no matter how small” Dr. Seuss. I believe each child should be treated equally no matter their disability, socio-economic status, ethnicity, etc. I serve students in small groups targeting their IEP goals. I would for them to meet them. Motivating my students is a challenge

The school I teach at has an eclectic group of students.

I work with small group so of students in grades K-5, including preschoolers. We have a dual immersion (Spanish speaking) school. This means half the day some students receive instruction in English and the other half in Spanish. We have a wide array of students who exhibit various learning modalities, academic delays, speech and language delays, ethnicities and socio-economic status. My students are all eager to learn. Each day brings a new adventure for us all.

My Project

I would like to use the iPads in my small groups. An app called SpeechTutor helps a child see where his/her articulators need to be when producing a specific sound (ie. /r/ or /s/). There are also opportunities for students to record their own voices to match the target sounds. Speech FlipBook is another app for students to record their voices and practice words with targeted speech sounds. Language apps including: Basic skills help facilitate and generalize understanding of using basic concepts (front/back). ISequence helps a student with sequencing (putting stories together in order, using concepts: first, next, last. Apps such as: iMovie and Comic Life help students with story retell and comprehension. A student can label parts of a story and use IMovie to retell or summarize a book or event. There are many more apps that can be used to help facilitate, generalize and most importantly motivate my students to meet their goals and carryover to daily life.

Even though I have small group settings, the iPad is very beneficial for my students to help keep them motivated, and to differentiate and accommodate their learning needs.

The iPad can also be used to help aid communication with parents and teachers/staff so that goals are generalized across all settings.
