My Students

My students are your prototypical middle school students. They love to learn (even if they won't admit to it), and they love to have fun (even when they are not supposed to). My students love to learn about the world and are consistently seeking to expand their horizons beyond the four walls of our classroom and the confines of our school. They love to learn and are constantly asking questions about the world around them.

More than 40% of the students at our school come from low-income households.

A further 11% of students are classified as English Language Learners. Nearly 44% of the school identifies as persons of color. Overall the students from our school are a very diverse crowd representative of the neighborhoods in which they come from. Our school serves over 1,500 students who are eager to learn about new and exciting perspectives.

My Project

Playful pedagogy and gamification are two core aspects of my classroom. What both of these seek to do is utilize the power of play inside the classroom to increase learning and engagement. The goal of this project is to give my classroom the tools necessary to implement multiple types of play into the classroom.

Our students are born into a digital gaming world.

It would be criminal in education to ignore the facts that our students are digital natives, and love to play. The two pieces of this project are a b3 beanbag toss tower and a wireless buzzer system. The wireless buzzer system will take our quiz games and student randomizing to a new level. No longer will students have to claim they raised their hands first. Now the tower will tell. The beanbag toss tower is an excellent scoring system to implement in the classroom. As teams answer questions correctly they get to throw a beanbag and earn that number of points. This introduces a level of skill/luck and randomizes scoring. By randomizing scoring we continue to offer hope to groups or students who fall behind that they can catch up.
