My Project
Our district is quite fortunate to have several highly qualified individuals in each building with professional training and higher ed degrees in technology and educational design. However, we lack the supplies to carry out our scaffolded units in STEAM and computational thinking. It is essential for students and their families to be able to relate STEAM technology with future careers. Students need hands-on learning applications where they can design and create original pieces based on their concept designs and apply computational thinking. Our community values our high school Trades Programs but cannot make the connection between elementary hands-on STEAM projects and careers in engineering, coding, design, and technology because of the lack of exposure to STEAM in the elementary classroom. I am also fortunate to have a dedicated space for our STEAM lessons, however, my students need mobile seating as they design. The Makerspace materials would establish the resources needed for multiple grade levels, in a community that already values hands-on education, while educating students, families, and the community on how STEAM Education positively impacts our future careers.
