My Project
I am a second-year, second-grade ELA teacher. My students inspire me daily with their determination to learn and read despite the challenges many of them face outside of school. However, many of my students fall behind due to circumstances out of their control.
Reflecting on my first year of teaching, I strive to foster more independence and bridge a stronger connection between phonics instruction and writing for my upcoming students.
I will use these recording buttons to record myself pronouncing each of the 44 sounds we have in English. This will be paired with a 'sound wall,' which displays different spelling patterns and an image of how our mouth looks when we say each sound. This supports students with orthographic mapping, connecting sounds to letters. Students will be able to use this wall at any point during independent work to help decode spelling patterns they may still struggle with or to help encode sounds they cannot independently connect to spelling patterns.
I am super excited to see the growth that the implementation of this tool will create in my classroom. I hope that by the end of the year, students will need to utilize this resource less and less as they begin not to require the added support of the wall!
