This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Motivating middle school students who are not interested in math can be a challenge which is why I focus on creating interactive notebooks for students to review in future classes. Since I began creating interactive notebooks with my students, I have seen an increase in math test scores.

My students come to school promptly everyday eager to learn but most struggle with turning in homework assignments because they do not understand the homework and they have misplaced the notes they copied in class.

Most of my students come from a low-income home and attend a 100% free and reduced lunch public school with a student population of 2400+, predominately Hispanic. They are individuals who have a strong desire to succeed in life but face many obstacles. They are smart, patient, and respectful students willing to learn math, but they lack organization skills. They attend a very populated school and still manage to come to class on time ready to learn. I have worked with them so far to have an interest in math through the use of interactive notebook and to try their best despite all the distractions.

My Project

One thing my 7th students struggle with is staying organized. Most of my students come to school without backpacks, binders, pencils, and/or paper. Composition notebooks would help my students become organize. They would use these notebooks to create their own book based on notes, classwork, and homework assignments, with a table of contents so they can easily access any topic they might need to review in the future. They will need two different colors of ink to be able to print out math project which we complete twice a month. Unfortunately, this is a large school with very limited resources and notebooks are not deemed as an essential resource for a classroom. They would greatly benefit from attaining these foundational skills that would transfer to higher education.
