Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Making math come alive is difficult when resources and manipulatives are limited. All of my students deserve hands-on learning with materials that help them make the connection between what they are learning and the real world.

Most of my second graders are English language learners who need a lot of oral vocabulary development and real-life connections to their learning in order to become successful members of the community at large.

They attend a school in a large urban area with limited resources but yet are very enthusiastic when it comes to participating in their own learning.

My Project

Many times, a math text book fails to truly demonstrate why what they are learning is important and without manipulatives this task is daunting. The manipulatives will help math come alive for them, which in turn will increase their interest and success! My students will also learn to work in small groups and pairs with these colorful manipulatives. My students already have magnetic white boards so all they would need are the magnetic manipulates. The small group work will be made possible and much more comfortable with the soft seats as opposed to them sitting on the cold tile. By giving them a comfortable place to sit while working in groups will also keep them engaged longer.

Providing my students with tangible, colorful math manipulatives will help engage them and make connections between what they are learning and their own life.

Interactive manipulatives such as magnetic coins and other such resources will help create a classroom where students can work in teams or pairs solving multistep math problems, without the fear of accidentally dropping their manipulatives and losing their answer.
