COVID-19 has put a strain on students academic achievement. A student's school day looked different. They didn't have the resources that a classroom would. They were asked to join zoom for a short period of time and had the liberty to move. Students were not held accountable for the their learning and many fell through the cracks. Students had a lack of hands on materials, need movement, and have gaps in their learning. These materials will allow me to target these issues.
Many families have struggled financially during the pandemic and rely on schools to provide materials.
Providing calculators would help close a financial gap. Calculators were a school supplies this year, and many families can not afford these. This tool is useful all throughout an individuals life and I would love to provide them access to this in the classroom. This also provides students an opportunity to complete higher level math with gaps in computing numbers.
Students can not sit for 8 hours. We jumped right back into a setting requiring them to do so. These flexible seating options will allow students wiggle room in their seats to avoid a classroom distraction. In addition to the flexible seating, clipboards allow students to work in an area that works for them. This might look different for many of our students, standing, laying, floor work.
The majority of my students do not read at a 7th grade reading level. Students need to be able to comprehend mathematical word problems in order to apply their learning to real world scenarios. Having headphones would close this gap for so many of my students. Due to the gaps, I have built in a weekly flex day. These games would provide mathematical reasoning opportunities for extension activities during this intervention time.
