My Students

Jonassen, Peck, & Wilson stated, “Students engage in more meaningful learning experiences when they use technology to produce knowledge, rather than to consume knowledge,” (as cited in Niederhauser, Lindstrom, and Strobel, 2007, pg 495). iPod touches allow the students to produce knowledge.

I teach a group of first graders who are smart, funny, and interactive learners.

My students love technology and are very much 21st century learners. They live in an interactive world. Our school is a low income school with diverse learners. Our school does have a computer lab which we are able to use once a week and we are considered an iSchool in our district. We have a cart of iPod touches we are able to use once a week which has increased engagement and motivation. Having a set to use in a small group would be very beneficial for my students. Jones stated, “The increased use of technology has helped ignite excitement in teaching and learning while building students’ critical-thinking and problem solving skills,” (2007, pg 37). This would allow my students to increase math and literacy skills while building problem solving skills which will increase their success in the classroom and outside of the classroom and become lifelong learners.

My Project

Integrating iPod touches into the classroom will increase engagement and learning for all my students. The touches will increase literacy and math skills for my English and ESL students. The touches allow me to add apps which work on specific literacy and math skills for my students. The apps can be simple and work on ABC's or more advanced for my higher students where they work on spelling words. This allows my students to be engaged during small group and center time with out me being right there to make sure they are on task. The iPod touch will also allow my students to practice reading by talking into the touch and then replaying what they read to themselves. I can also listen to my students reading which gives me another way to monitor their reading. Using iPod touches in the class will increase my students literacy and math skills while engaging them. Our students come from an interactive society now and this allows them to be interactive learners in the classroom.

One goal I have is to have my first graders become more involved in technology.

Integrating iPod touches in my classroom is one way that will help me reach this goal. The impact of the iPod touches will increase my students achievement in the classroom. The engagement in the classroom will increase and their motivation will increase also. Integrating iPod touches in the classroom creates an interactive environment for my students to succeed in and allows my students to be interactive learners.
