This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The days of asking students to sit in their seats and learn are long gone. With the new fast-paced world, students need educational opportunities that are engaging and interactive. Special Education students need interactive activities even more to increase their understanding of the standards.

I am a special education teacher in California with students who have various disabilities such as autism, intellectual delays, and specific learning disabilities.

Every day, my students learn academics as well as life and social skills that they need to be a part of their community. Students are placed in my classroom because they have the ability to understand concepts beyond basic functional academics. They are at an elementary school with non-disabled peers and are taught general education standards. In my classroom, I am able to provide instruction at a pace they need with additional hands-on practice to ensure that they can be successful.

My Project

I have recently received an interactive whiteboard from my principal to use in my classroom. Interactive whiteboards are engaging and allow students to work interactively with the software to gain a better understanding of the skills being taught. The interactive whiteboard will provide additional practice for my students when they are learning both general education standards as well as life skills. The activities I chose range from reading comprehension skills to number sense concepts such as place value and more functional academics including telling time and counting money. I also included a game that is not for the interactive whiteboard, but will allow students to be engaged in social skills development through playing a game with their peers.

My job as a teacher is to help my students overcome the difficulties that come with their disability to reach their greatest potential and become positive members of their community.

Elementary school is the foundation of life-long learning. With this project, the students will be fully engaged in their learning.
