My Students

My students struggle everyday to communicate with those around them.

Many are non verbal. Imagine the frustration you would feel at not being able to communicate basic wants and needs. That is what these children experience daily. With iPads, we could add a communication app.

They vary in abilities from preschool to third grade. Some are non-verbal and can exhibit self harming behaviors when their needs are not met. They are all individual learners with every student taught at their own level. We can do very little larger group instruction. Our goals tend to be related to making the students as independent and self-sufficient as possible. Communication is a big part of this. They are a joy to work with everyday and we celebrate every small step and growth. I couldn't ask for a better job. The only downfall is our lack of technology.

My Project

Our first task will be to put a communication app on the iPads to help our students communicate their wants and needs. Imagine the frustration of not being able to tell someone what is wrong when you are ill or what you want. We will also apply apps to help students identify emotions and help them ask for tools for sensory regulation. We will also add apps to reinforce academic skills that they are working on so it is a fun activity for them.

With the use of iPads, student's self injurious behaviors and frustrations will decrease because they will be able to communicate what they need and how they are feeling.

They will become happier individuals with the ability to become more independent.
