Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

100% of our students are recently-arrived immigrants to America. My students speak more than 40 native languages and yearn to be part of the "American experience." However, they face many obstacles and unfamiliar stressors in adjusting to their new lives here: most are the primary translators for their families; many are child-care providers to younger siblings; and many must work almost full-time to support their families' economic needs. They are also dedicated to their education, and see collaboration, team building, and communication as pillars for their success in the U.S..

Re-opening our NYC classrooms after COVID, my 5-member teaching team is determined to "think outside the box" and will utilize Nearpod to recreate the ways we are building community, engaging and challenging students to learn remotely, despite lacking in-class resources.

In addition, most of our students are in remote learning spaces at home that do accommodate quiet, focused areas. Many are the only English-speaker in their household, and must juggle school with a myriad of family responsibilities throughout the day. They need our extra support now more than ever.

My Project

My 5-educator teaching team is determined to embed interactive, engaging, "live" lessons into our daily work, lessons and unit plasns, and need the help of NearPod - a pioneering digital learning platform that can help transform our teaching - and our students' learning. Nearpod will enable us to offer English, Math, US History, Science and Health and English-Language Learning into all lessons using the platform, as well as create more interactive interdisciplinary units, projects and portfolio work. All of these efforts will allow students to demonstrate their learning in new ways that engage not only themselves and their classmates, but also their families and other students in our school. One of our team-teachers already has experience on Nearpod, so will turnkey his knowledge so that we can all "get planning" engaging units as soon as possible.
