Interactive, Hands-on Science!

My students need models of atoms so that they are able to interactively create atoms, more lamination pouches for their manipulatives, and markers for their whiteboards!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"We see only what we know," Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said and in order for my students to know science concepts, they really do need to see.

I teach at a charter school, where my students attend school from 7:15-5 pm.

My school is a Title One school and in the 6th grade, we have about 90% of students on free or reduced lunch. My students are mostly English Language Learners, who need a lot of visual cues. We use white boards and manipulatives so that every single student can master the objective for the day.

My Project

This cart might seem random and unorganized but every single material in this cart is for a reason. I ordered whiteboards for the students last year through Donors Choose, however, we have used the markers so many times that the markers are now drying out! We need additional markers so that we are able to continue to use the whiteboards. We also received a lamination machine last year, however, we have laminated so many manipulatives, that we need more lamination pouches so that we can continue to make science more concrete and interactive. Lastly, the models of atoms will allow students to grasp such an abstract concept as atomic structure.

This project will help my classroom continue to be the interactive classroom it has become thanks to all of the donors.

My class has become less about taking notes and more about interacting with science concepts. Creating such an interactive classroom allows the students to really fall in love with science. Hopefully, this love of science will carry on with them so that they will eventually have a career in science.
