My Students
Can you imagine learning world geography without maps? Or learning about the 50 states when you weren't born in America? That's how my students feel and we need maps, atlases, and books about the world to improve their geography skills.
I teach 6th grade self-contained in a Title I school with 85% of students who receive free and reduced lunch.
Our school has approximately 400 English Language Learners with 32 languages spoken on campus. Many of our students were not born in the USA and did not grow up learning about our national geography, let alone world geography. They are an amazing and diverse group of excited learners, but our resources are limited.
My Project
My students need desk maps and student atlases to better understand where they live and the places we study about. They also need a variety of books about maps and geography in our class library to explore in their free time, and also reference for assignments. They will use composition books as a daily tool to create a "Geography Resource Notebook" that they can use even after 6th grade. By having so many great geography resources, students will also be able to share their experiences from other countries with each other. My goal is that all of my 6th graders know the basics of geography when they leave 6th grade: all 50 states, the continents, oceans and major waterways, etc.
Growing up in a new country isn't easy for my students because everything is new, and sometimes confusing.
By supporting this project, you will supplying an extremely diverse and underserved group of students with updated and useful information that will help them navigate the world around them.
