This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students face difficult challenges outside of the school environment and I want my classroom to be a safe haven. As a science teacher, I like to incorporate as many hands-on activities as possible to make science fun. Most students think science is boring, and I love challenging that notion.

90 % of our student body is economically disadvantaged.

Most come to school without breakfast or simple school supplies. Since their life outside of school is hard, I want my class to be a safe haven. The most important thing for me to accomplish is to gain their trust. Once I have that, they are willing to go to the moon and back for me. We have a higher than average drop out rate, simply due to the population we serve, but I always tell my students that it is not an option. If I can gain their trust, they come to class and put effort in to their work. They know that I care and will do whatever I can for them. Sadly, most don't get that attention when they leave my classroom.

My Project

As a biology teacher, I have been charged with raising test scores. Students need to be taught how to create and use long-term memory, especially for difficult concepts. With the colored paper and markers, there are a variety of foldables and graphic organizers that my students can create to help them take ownership of the material. These materials will be used in every unit and possible multiple times within a unit. Any time students can interact with information and organize it in a way that makes sense to them, long-term assimilation will take place. Retaining information will therefore raise test scores.

Students like to use color and some students are natural artists.

I teach my students that color-coding with note-taking helps with memorization. These students have traditionally been given materials that have been used multiple times or ones they can't customize and take home. These supplies will allow each student to interact with the information and create something they are proud of and be willing to utilize as a study guide.
