My Students
Do you remember your favorite class and what made it so special? Surely it wasn't a class filled with worksheets and lectures. I want to provide my students with hands-on and interactive activities. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I Learn!
I teach at a small, rural, Title I school.
My students range in age from nine to fourteen. Many struggle with difficult circumstances, yet they maintain positive attitudes and are eager to learn. I have six classes of awesome fifth and sixth graders. The students enjoy our interactive learning environment and enjoy the experience of school. I try to integrate subjects as much as possible so that the students are able to make real life connections.
The average per capita income for my county is $17,225. The poverty rate in my county in 2008 was 21.5%. The official U.S. poverty rate in 2008 was 13.2% (U.S. Census Bureau). With today's economy, I am sure that the statistics are even more daunting. Approximately eighty percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
We are requesting a K'NEX Renewable Energy Kit and numerous other supplies, such as colored pens, colored pencils, graph paper and toner for use with our interactive notebooks.
The use of hands-on activities and interactive notebooks keep the students engaged with their learning. This helps the students to take ownership and develop confidence. It is exciting and rewarding for the students to be able to look back through their interactive notebooks and see how much they have grown academically. The notebooks provide them with a vibrantly colorful documentation of their learning for the year.
This project is important to me because I want to provide my students with resources that will allow them the creativity to express their learning in a style that fits them best.
Using the requested resources, one student may draw a diagram or graph, another student may write a notebook entry, a third may create and print a foldable for their notebook. I want my students to realize that everyone has strengths and they should each draw on their own strengths as we learn and share together.
