Intensive Reading Should NOT Be Worksheets!

My students need 25 subscriptions to Upfront Magazine to provide them with rigorous, engaging materials. Upfront Magazine, published by the NY Times, is perfect to fit the bill for my reluctant, intensive 10th-grade readers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school Intensive Reading, and it is the hardest teaching job on the planet! Why? Lots of reasons... The biggest one is changing a "failing" mentality. Another reason is lack of high school materials for students who read on a 5th- to 7th-grade level. They don't want "dumbed down" books....

....they are students who want to read, but want to read something that is interesting and current.

My students are mostly in the minority and are on free or reduced-price lunch. My school is a technical high school where, in addition to college and career readiness, they also receive a technological certification (culinary, automotive, etc.) so they can earn a good living and provide for themselves and their families. These students have not been successful on Florida's FCAT assessments in reading, and they are hungry to improve. Indeed, our first data points show we have improved by half of a traditional school year in nine short weeks! With new curriculum, we have the Shakespeare and the Walt Whitman.... Now we need the current events magazine Upfront so they can read about what is happening all over the world and incorporate it into their writing and speaking. New Florida Standards need new materials, and my 25 peeps need a magazine that captivates them. This NY Times Upfront publication is the one.

My Project

The requested 25 subscriptions to this magazine will be used for... enjoyment! You see, some of my students have "failed" the FCAT since third grade, and it is not uncommon for me to hear things like, "Miss, I'm just going to fail it again. Why am I doing all of this work?" Or, "Miss, I haven't read a book since I was in 5th grade." How does this happen?!?! And now, with new Florida Standards, the stakes are even higher. How do I have students in my 10th-grade Intensive Reading class that have been taught to loathe reading? Reading should not mean worksheets, and reading should rank higher on the "What do you do in your spare time?" survey than the latest video game release! I am hoping Upfront Magazine will help my students read at grade level about things they need to understand about the world around them. Someone once said, "There comes a time when you have to choose between closing the book or turning the page." That is EXACTLY what I want my students to experience, and for most of them, it will be the first time.

My classroom has a textbook, workbook, and novels that intimidate my students.

That's it. This NY Times magazine will whet their appetites.... and make them realize that a young adult CAN indeed enjoy reading. I want to build the choices in my classroom because I want my students to reach for my AP Art History class textbook and not be intimidated by it's 4" spine and 10-pound heft. My students have every right to believe that they CAN read, they CAN pass a standardized test, and they CAN enjoy reading.
