Integrating Winter Holidays and Social Studies in 1st Grade!
My students need books to learn about the winter holidays. They also need winter paper and pencils. Lastly, they need materials to make snowmen and snowflakes.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently have 24 six and seven year old students in my classroom. I am teaching first-graders in a Title I school, located in a high poverty and high crime area of Pennsylvania.
All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students come from homes where English is not spoken. I have three special education students and two ESL (English as a Second Language) students in my classroom. Several of the students in my classroom have an in-class social worker.
My Project
In our Social Studies unit this year we will studying the Winter holidays.
My first graders will integrate art and Social Studies by creating Winter decorations and stories after reading about Christmas and Hanukah.
My students will read and listen to Curious George and Clifford holiday stories. They will then write about their favorite part of the story with their new holiday pencils and paper.
After my students listen to our Social Studies books, they will make snowmen and snowflake picture frames. They will decorate these objects with the stickers. Lastly, they will end our Social Studies unit, by making winter bracelets.
