My Students
My students are ambitious and active learners. For our end term goal, the students will learn to integrate the use of technology in our Social Studies curriculum. The challenge is to help them understand how the growth of an urban community is affected by the availability of public transportation.
My second grade students are in a Title One public school.
Students are from low-income nuclear and/or extended families. The students are exploring various topics in Social Studies. On a daily basis, we are engaged in various activities to meet the State and the City's Common Core Standards. For our Social Studies program, the students are learning to be proficient English language learners by practicing their oral communication skills during class discussions. They will learn to find relevant information about a mode of transportation that he/she selected. For their independent project, the students will sketch different types of transportation, to write informative pieces, and to use digital resources to help present their work. We encourage them to ask their parent(s) and/ or grandparent(s) to be involved with their education by asking them to talk to their child about what they have learned, go visit the local libraries, and to discuss current events.
My Project
My students need an Apple MacBook Pro laptop with Retina Display to improve their technology skills. Students can use the donated Apple Mac Pro laptop to create a project independently and/or work cooperatively in small groups. The students will learn to choose applications from the computer's hard drive and to find child friendly websites on the Internet to create a digital file about the Transportation unit in our Social Studies curriculum. We like to engage students in a variety of learning activities so they would have the tools to help improve their reading, writing, and computer literacy skills. For their individual projects, the students can learn to be more proficient in the English language by learning to sketch various parts of the mode of transportation, to organize their facts and to use various applications such as Microsoft Word, Keynote, iPhoto, and iDVD to create a slideshow to present and to discuss what he or she has discovered with the other students, parent(s) and/or grandparent(s). Finally, the students will be able to save and to make a DVD copy to keep.
The donation of an Apple Mac Pro laptop with Retina Display would benefit my students' ability to use technology with other subjects, such as Science, Music, Art and Math.
The students will sketch or to create 3D scale models of various modes of transportation that they selected from the websites and to write informative pieces. The students will create a slideshow to keep track of their progress or difficulties they encountered and to share the information with their classmates.
