Integrating Art into 7th Grade Through Project-Based Learning

My students need Kids Poster Paints, Expo dry erase markers, Post-it Easel Pads, pencils with erasers, Crayola and Sharpie markers, and Post-it Notes.

My Students

The seventh grade students at our rural Eastern North Carolina school are focused on getting to and through college, despite the challenges they face living in a low-income setting.

They are excited to grow their knowledge, and to develop the skills necessary to be successful later in life.

They work with urgency and grit to reach their goals, and they truly understand that their work and learning is never done. They are eager to make a difference in their lives, the lives of their families, and in their community as a whole.

My Project

My students need art supplies so that they can participate in project-based learning. This will increase student engagement, learning and achievement. This project requests Kids Poster Paints, Expo dry erase markers, Post-it Easel Pads, pencils with erasers, Crayola and Sharpie markers, and Post-it Notes.

Culturally responsive, hands-on projects increase student learning, but cannot happen without the required materials.

Our students need to be able to create projects to demonstrate the topics we are learning in science, math, English and history. With the supplies from this project, we will be able to begin doing so. Our students will be able to paint, draw, and present their knowledge in a rigorous, engaging way.

My students will develop both academic and social-skills through this project. Academically, they will increase their knowledge in all future projects by engaging in project-based learning. As student engagement in assignments increases, they will be able to be far more successful academically. Students will also develop the skills of teamwork and collaboration as they work together to share the actual supplies and to create their projects. Students have also taken the initiative to solve a real-life problem they experience at our school, a lack of resources. Learning to problem-solve and developing self-advocacy is critical for success in life, college, and in any career field. Their development of these skills will truly be invaluable for their success throughout their lives.
