Integrated Units for Gifted Readers

Help me give my students units of instruction from Vanderbilt University's Programs for Talented Youth. These units are complex, designed for gifted and advanced readers, integrated, and support the development of critical thinking skills.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Ewbank's classroom raised $297

My Students

"Can I read more than that?" called out several of the students in my class last year as they were introduced to texts that were new and engaging to them. The texts provided a challenge for higher level thinking that they didn't have in their regular classroom, and they were so excited!

My students are eager readers who thrive on engaging and challenging texts.

They attend a Title I schools and most receive a free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. They come from mixed backgrounds--Spanish-speaking, rural, low-income and medium-income, but they all get excited to come to their AIG, or academically and intellectually gifted, class twice a week to "think until their brain hurts".

My Project

My students are eager and ready to go! As a small group teacher for academically and intellectually gifted students, I want to be able to share engaging new units with my students this school year. The units are already aligned to our standards and integrate a variety of text types that are linked together by a common concept.

With these units, my students will be challenged to make connections and defend ideas in new ways as they analyze fiction text, nonfiction text, poetry, and artwork.

We will explore encounters with archetypes as we look at similarities in characters, settings, and themes in novels, poems, nonfiction, and art. Students will take an integrated approach to exploring ecology through fiction and nonfiction texts, such as The One and Only Ivan, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and The Other Side. We will investigate math and science content related to space through the concept of structure.

This way of thinking is not typically introduced in elementary school, and I am so excited to share it with my readers!
