My Students
Think back to your high school music experience: you probably were in the choir, band, or general music, performing music every day - and with joy! That is not the reality for my students. Instead, children learn music with dented, substandard instruments and otherwise lacking educational resources.
My students attend school in a building where the paint is literally peeling from the walls.
Living in rural Mississippi, 97% of students are on free or reduced lunch, and a fraction of the student body has ever touched an instrument. My students love music, but know nothing about rhythm or melody. They have learned a lot in our nine weeks together, but with the proper materials, they can learn so, so much more.
My Project
My students love producing music. They can rap, they can understand the basics of four-four time (they're not too shabby with three-four or six-eight, either!), and they can identify basic musical instruments. However, having the percussion instruments from this project would help them understand musical concepts in a way that simply isn't possible without the proper tools. With the bell set, students will be able to learn about scales, intervals, and other intermediate and advanced melody concepts. With the other instruments, students will experience rhythm in a whole new way.
Even beyond the musical concepts students will learn and practice, having these resources will teach students a healthy, academic way to express themselves.
