Over the past few years, I have been working on increasing our school's inventory of ukuleles in order to provide each student in 6th grade with an instrument to check out during the school year. By having the opportunity to have the instrument in their hands at any given time, it encourages students to explore new areas and build skill outside of our biweekly 45-minute lessons. Additionally, the opportunity to learn ukulele in Hawaiʻi for our military impacted students allows them a sense of connectedness during their time here on the islands.
This investment has proven effective and now I need to work on replacing our classroom set that is breaking.
Over the last 2-3 years of checking out instruments to students, I have seen growth happen every year and an increased sense of accomplishment and connectedness with my students. This year I received the best playing tests in my career. However, my classroom set that I keep on hand for students that forget their instruments on music day is beginning to fall apart.
The current classroom set is comprised of instruments that are 50-60 year old student models. These instruments have served their purpose well but are now ready to be retired. I currently have 10 instruments that are no longer usable that I need to replace as soon as possible. This project will help to provide instruments that are easy to tune and play and that can withstand the climate variability in the classroom.
Mahalo for your consideration in assisting our music program.
