This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school is a Title I school with over 80% of its students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Over the last four years, I have been blessed to teach an elective course called AVID.
In AVID, we prepare students for rigorous curriculum that they will encounter in advanced courses as well as help them build skills for college and to be successful in future careers.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, and most of them will be first generation college students. They are driven, hard workers that truly want to learn.
My Project
As an AVID teacher, it is my job to help students prepare for college, introduce them to different colleges, as well as help them determine possible career choices for their future. My school district has decided to invest in Nepris. Nepris is a digital platform that connects teachers and students with industry experts. For example, if my students are interested in video game design, I can set up a video conference with a professional video game designer so they can learn about the profession.
In order to be able to get the most out of this opportunity, we need high quality video conferencing capabilities.
We need a high quality webcam that can capture our entire class with a great microphone to boot. We also need high quality speakers so that the whole class can hear and take part in the learning.
This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about different careers that they may never learn about. Our students are socio-economically disadvantaged and are very sheltered when it comes to different career paths. They do not know what different jobs entail, and I would love this opportunity to expose them to new ideas and opportunities. This will be especially wonderful for my STEM students so that they can learn about different jobs in the STEM industries.
