My language arts students need 4 skill books, 10 subscriptions to Time For Kids magazine, dry erase markers and 1-2 copies of 10+ books, including the "Harry Potter" boxed set and "Monster", by Walter Dean Myers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th grade English Language Arts / Literacy. I teach in a high need community in New York.

My students do not have the economic means to purchase reading books. Their local library is usually do not carry the titles in which they are interest in. Due to the high crime rate in their community, my students cannot travel outside of their neighborhood. It would be difficult for my students to travel to another library that may have the book(s) of their interest. My students have shown a high interest in independent reading. I would like to have some popular book titles available in the classroom library.

The resources I need are various popular book titles for the classroom library, which include, Harry Potter and the Diary of a Whimpy Kid. Time for Kids is an excellent source for the classroom that will help my students be exposed to current events. It integrates social studies with literacy. I have also included dry eraser markers for cooperative learning groups. I place my students in groups, and they are responsible to present their final answers on dry eraser boards. We do not have the markers available. There is a high need for differentiation in the classroom, so I have included workbooks that can be reproduced as worksheets for our Literacy Station.

Being raised in a high-need community myself, I know the feeling of not having resources available. You can help make a difference in an inner city child's life by helping to fund this project.
