Instilling Positive Classroom Community Through a Picture Book a Day!
My students need quality literature that will help us build classroom community, instill a positive growth mindset, and spark a creative outlet for their imagination.
I teach 4th grade in Southern California at a high poverty elementary school. Many of my scholars (students) are English Language Learners, some having just arrived from another country. A majority of them receive free or reduced meals.
I strongly believe in creating a classroom atmosphere where each scholar is valued and respected.
My school's motto is to be "Responsible, Respectful, and Ready to Learn." Character Education, Growth Mindset, and Classroom Community are life long skills that my scholars work on throughout their 4th grade school year.
My Project
Reading has always been a huge component in my classroom. I have a large reading rug where my 4th graders and I gather for our class read-aloud. This year, I want to set aside a devoted time for "Picture Book a Day."
I've always believed reading can take you anywhere, even if it's only for a short duration of time.
I feel the emphasis and priority of picture books often gets lost in the upper grades. I believe there's so many valuable lessons and skills picture books can teach my scholars.
Quality picture books can lead to powerful classroom discussions among my scholars. I am a huge advocate of classroom community, so many of my book selections touch on that theme. In addition, several of my choices also discuss a positive growth mindset. I want our "Picture Book a Day" time to be something my scholars look forward to. All the while promoting a love for reading!
