Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Kindergarten and ESL at a Title One school in New Mexico. Our school is 100% free lunch and breakfast. I work with a group of very sweet and deserving disadvantaged five and six year old children who sure do love learning! Several of my students are learning English as a second language.

My students get a typical art class every other year for 1 hour every other week. Quite frankly, this is not nearly enough. I simply must supplement this scarce district-provided art curriculum. I love to study and create art with my students. I enjoy providing them with true creativity-based art experiences. My dilemma is that I get no money at all to purchase any materials, let alone art materials. No Child Left Behind has increased academic demands while almost obliterating art and music. Although I am equipped and excited to create with my beautiful students, I cannot do so without paint.

Having paints and other art materials will ensure that my classroom is equipped for a creative and art-friendly environment. It also gives students such pride to see their artwork up in our classroom art gallery. This project will make art experiences a reality for my students. Art is a strength for many of my students; being able to express themselves through something they are successful at brings them joy and empowers them. Every child is successful at art! We just need the materials to incorporate art in our classroom!

Thank you so much for your time, generosity, and caring. You are making a huge difference in the lives of very sweet, grateful, and deserving children!
