Instant Dystopia: Framing Dystopian Lit Through Photography
Help me give my students the experience of exploring dystopian themes and settings through photography! By using an analog camera, students can experience an immediate connection to their work, mirroring the raw and unfiltered nature of dystopian societies.

My Project
Students will read a dystopian novel or short story and then work in groups to create a photo series that visually represents key themes or settings from the text.
In order to tie the project to the nature of a dystopia, students will use an Instax camera to capture imperfect images that portray an authentic, raw moment in time.
Read & Analyze: Students read the selected dystopian novel or short story and select key themes or settings to capture These could be aspects like surveillance, the loss of individuality, oppressive governments, or bleak environments.
Choose a Scene/Theme: Students choose a theme from the novel that they want to visually represent.
Conceptualize: Each group brainstorms ideas for what visual elements they might look for around the building and grounds.
Photography Session: Students will use their Instax cameras to take photos that represent their interpretation of the dystopian themes.
Create a Photo Collage or Journal: Once the photos are developed, students will arrange them in a collage. Each photo must be accompanied by a brief description of the scene/theme depicted, along with an explanation of how the photo connects to the concept of a dystopia. Student collages will be laminated in order to preserve their work.
Presentation: Each student will display their photos and analysis on a bulletin board.
