Inspiring Young Readers After Hurricane Matthew!

My students need a variety of books for reading aloud to increase literacy skills.

My Students

One of the most important activity a teacher can utilize for young children is reading aloud. Reading aloud is the foundation for literacy development and it contributes to reading success. It provides teachers with the opportunity to enhance early literacy skills.

My kindergarten students are economically-disadvantaged young children who lack early literacy experiences when entering school.

However, they are eager to learn and have to ability to overcome this challenge. As a kindergarten teacher, I am trying to close the socioeconomic status achievement gap between students. I believe all children learn differently but all children are able to learn.

My Project

Your generous donation will provide books for reading aloud to demonstrate print concepts and fluent reading. It improves students’ comprehension by demonstrating “think aloud” which models how to make connections while reading. Additionally, students need to be exposed to a variety of text which will help spark their interest in books and a desire to become a reader.

The picture shows my big books that were discarded because they were soaked in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

These books will replace the ones that were damaged. I used these books each year for reading aloud.

Reading aloud is an effective literacy instruction which improves students’ reading ability. If I’m able to help my student become readers, then they will be successful in school which will open many doors for them in life.
