Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For most of my students school is a sanctuary, a place where they can temporarily escape and immerse themselves in learning and a world different than the community they live in. My 9th grade students want to learn about Malala's inspirational journey, her struggle for equality, and for education.

My students live in a community that is plagued with violence and poverty.

Despite facing many obstacles they come to school regularly because they know about the importance of an education and how this can transform their lives. Most students come from immigrant families, and are English Language Learners. Our school has a strong reading culture, unfortunately we don't always have the resources to provide them with high interest books. Social Justice is also a recurring theme and one of our school's core beliefs.

My Project

By providing each student with her/ his own copy of this book students will be able to actively engage with the text and learn and practice critical annotation strategies. Annotation is a skill that they will need to master by the time they attend college, being able to write and annotate in their own books will help them prepare for this. Additionally, these books will enable my students to participate in Socratic seminars/ literature circles where they will be able to engage in rich discussions about their reading.

"I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education" is an incredible book that will definitely have a positive impact on my students.

Her riveting story about her struggle for education will not only inform them about a different culture and part of the world, but it will also serve as a reminder that despite it all there is always hope. My students will be able to connect with Malala's story and their lives will be transformed after reading this powerful book.
