Inspiring Young DJs With Real Electronic Instruments
We need real instruments to give us hands-on experience with electronic music production. Students conducted research and learned about these essential items: midi keyboard, drum pad, a PC with production software, and a drum machine.

About My Students
My students are a diverse and dynamic group of 6th-8th graders attending Creative Science School in Portland, Oregon. We are a focus-option K-8 public school that relies upon inquiry and student-guided units to challenge students to think critically and offers them opportunities to research and discover answers to their own questions. Our school utilizes integrated studies, simulations and Storyline curriculum to present students with provocative essential questions and classrooms that value group work, presentation, exploration, rigor and curiosity. We strive to help our students become critical thinkers, courageous problem-solvers and compassionate community builders by providing classrooms that offer opportunities for students to design their own projects and communicate their learning.
Our Electronic Music Production elective is the only music class offered at our school. Music education helps develop our adolescent brains and improves our spatial intelligence. Creative arts have also been shown to improve our problem solving skills and our performance on standardized tests. The instruments included in our project will not only challenge us to take our beat-making to the next level, but they will also challenge us to look even closer at music composition and theory while expanding our knowledge of the music genres we love. And, the more music we make, the more chances we'll have for developing our abilities for providing constructive feedback to peers and collaborating with classmates.
In Their Own Words
"I want to become a better beat-maker and producer." - DJ Spiderman320
"I want to produce music professionally sometime and we need better equipment to get me off to a good start." - DJ WaffleCat56
"I want to be able to use what I've learned to learn new skills and create music that is actually decent." -DJ Roomba
"I want to expand on the talents I've got from the last class." -DJ FantasticFox
"Having real instruments, like a midi keyboard, means that we don't have to use a mouse to make music. We both started off on the piano, and a midi keyboard will allow us to use our piano skills to make music we like." - Banditos (aka DJ Shoninabag & DJ Shoninacan)
"Learning to use the tools we're asking for will help me make decisions, like when I choose the right sounds and instruments in tracks I make." - DJ La Luna Lobo
"This project will give me another way to express myself and I hope to inspire others with my music." DJ Pacosinbag
"Electronic Music helps me embrace my love of music and makes me more confident to share it with other people." -DJ The Junkyard Monkey
"The apps we are currently using are aggravating and limited. These instruments will allow me to make rad music that sounds the way I want it to." DJ BRS
"In this class, we get to do cool stuff. The music equipment we have is horrible. We need new equipment so we can actually make music that sounds great and professional." -DJ FishForFish
