My Students

"Who wrote that book?" is a question I get every time I read a great book to my 15 kindergartners. My answer is always that a great author wrote the book and that I have 15 great authors in my class! My students love to write but we need more writing resources to keep the stories flowing!

I have 15 students in my kindergarten class.

Our school is the poorest school in our district with 100% of our students on free lunch. My students all live below the poverty line, most in families making less than $5,000 a year. Many of my children do not have fathers or do not know their father. All of my young authors live in the largest public housing project in the city. Despite all of these obstacles and the lack of supplies and resources, they show up to our classroom everyday with a smile on their face, a desire and a willingness to learn and work and with stories to tell.

My Project

I am requesting journals, paper, and writing supplies to provide my children with opportunities to write and create and share stories every day. These materials will provide opportunities not only to create stories, but to also tell their own stories. My children love to make up stories about animals and space and monsters but we have such limited resources that paper is always at a premium. Without paper my students have nothing to write on. Without paper and journals, my students miss out on the opportunity to become inspiring authors. In my class is the next great author, these just need the materials to foster their love of writing and creating.

This project and these materials will allow my students to continue to improve their writing skills so that they can create and share their stories with others.

Your donation will provide journals and paper so my students will not lack the chance to write every day! And writing everyday will produce future inspiring authors!
