Inspiring Tomorrow's Engineers with EV3 Robotics Kits

Help me give my students an EV3 LEGO robotics kit to learn about engineering and computer programming so they can become creators (and not just consumers) of technology.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Although my students come from one of the poorest areas of the South Bronx, they bring a wealth of experiences and ideas to my classroom. They are eager to have meaningful learning opportunities that build upon their interests while teaching the skills necessary to our succeed in our technology-driven society.

To stay the odds are stacked against my students is understatement; yet, with the support of caring teachers and other staff members, my students are graduating and moving on to university and/or successful careers.

Most students enter our school performing below grade level in terms of reading and mathematics. They find themselves subjected to a system of institutional discrimination that makes it difficult for students of color and non-native English speakers to advance. For my classroom photo, I chose a picture from our most recent graduation to show that my students are capable of great achievements, but they need access to the same resources as their more affluent suburban peers (thank you DonorsChoose.org!) and quality teaching.

My Project

Many of our students are interested in engineering, computer science, or video game design, but we don't offer any courses to support these interests. We're trying to expand our course selection to meet the growing needs of our students and give them an opportunity to learn about computer coding by designing, building, and programming their own robots.

With the LEGO EV3 robotics kits, students will be able to create robots to do everything from playing basketball to navigating a "burning building" to conduct a rescue mission.

They'll only be limited by their own imaginations. My students will begin by learning to code with a simple graphical interface, and then, as their skills grow, we'll switch to a more advanced coding language like ROBOTC.
