This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Winston Churchill once said "The empires of the future are the empires of the mind." Help our children become the empires of the mind by providing the technology they need in school!
I teach enthusiastic first graders at an economically challenged school.
Most of my students come from predominantly Spanish speaking homes and their parents don't have the financial means to have computers at home, yet alone an iPad, so they rely on us to teach them all there is to know about technology. In today's society, technology continues to quickly advance but our schools remain with bulky old computers that take several minutes just to turn on. Throughout the day my students always want to know more about what they are learning because they have been exposed to very little given their circumstances. It is unfortunate that they are unable to get an immediate response to their inquiries due to the lack of resources at home and at school. I want to change that by including an iPad into my everyday lessons.
My Project
I will use the iPad as a visual aid when teaching. Second language learners really benefit from pictures when explaining a new word to them. Therefore, I usually get on the computer and try to find pictures to help explain these unfamiliar words. By the time I walk over to our computers and find what I’m looking for, I’ve already wasted crucial learning minutes. With an iPad, I will eliminate the wasted learning time because as the students sit quietly on the rug, I will reach right over, grab the lightweight iPad, and instantly find visuals. The students will get to see how I search for words and eventually they will be able to do their own researching.
I will also be using the iPad to work with students who need more practice in all academic areas. The iPad has many apps that can assist in reinforcing reading and math skills. The students will get individualized time to work on their challenging areas and even learn how to use the iPad.
Your donation and your support are so important because not only will you be helping my second language learners academically but they will also learn about today’s technology.
This will make such an impact to their lives because it's an opportunity they will only get to have at school. From this point on, each child that walks through my classroom door will be one step ahead of building tomorrow's dream.
