My Project
Please help me bring back the joy of reading books. I am working really hard to shape 1st graders into readers. I remember when I was in elementary school, my teachers read aloud stories and I loved listening to stories at a listening center and transporting myself into the setting. Times have changed a lot.
Nowadays, teachers are competing against social media and all that comes with that.
It’s been challenging getting them engaged and able to comprehend the gist of stories. I believe I have to get back to basics and tap into the part of children that makes them curious beings. I need to find ways to captivate their attention in more ways than one.
The listening center will not only be an individual headset, but their portal into another dimension. And believe me, I am ready to sell it just like that. The stories I’ve selected are classics and some informational text. Listening to stories and looking at text will provide a multi sensory method for student to access reading. It will provide an English language model for English learners, a calming and engaging space for students that need a bit of behavior, and access to text for students that are still learning to read. This little listening center will work magic for all students.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
