My Students

"And then, I realized what you do with an idea...You change the world." This beautiful quote embodies the messages in many of the texts included in this project. These books are a wonderful way to teach children the social and emotional skills they need to overcome obstacles in their own lives.

My students are an energetic group of children who are so excited about "growing their brains" and going "up, up, up til the end of the year" on their tests!

They support and celebrate one another in their growth. They are learning how to persevere even when learning seems hard. Just last week there was an observer in my classroom who noted that during their centers one child was heard saying to the others "Don't worry just try your best and keep going!" They are really beginning to internalize messages that will help them be successful as they overcome obstacles. Books are an amazing tool in learning how to deal with a myriad of problems. Stories allow students to explore problems and possible solutions. When partnered with strong lessons on comprehension and discussions, students are able to critically analyze the problems and solutions characters face. Through reading students get to experience the same journey as the characters and stretch themselves and their minds.

My Project

My students need inspiring books that tells stories of young children following their dreams, working hard, and persisting through problems. These books will be used as read aloud texts throughout the year and also will be available for students to retell the stories and partner read during independent reading time. Students will complete comprehension activities that are designed for these stories and practice essential skills for young readers. Even for the most struggling readers they will be able to explore the beautiful pictures in these texts and "picture walk" as they become ready to read. It is so important that young readers fall in love with books. They need to experience the way books can transport you to places and let you have experiences things you would not otherwise. It is important for young learners to learn that books can make you laugh out loud or cry, as you feel what the characters feel. My students have definitely connected strongly to some stories this year and I have no doubt they will also connect with the stories in this project.

I really believe in encouraging my students to push themselves and to dream big.

I think these books will help to do just that! I also think these stories have a magical and heartwarming appeal which students will enjoy and connect with. Thank you for helping us on our journey to become lovers of literature!
