Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Opening up a Time for Kids magazine is like opening up a window to the world, which motivates young my young readers in my diverse classroom. Learning about animals, cultures, and current events will inspire them to read more.

My students who attend this inner-city public school in California are very diverse, many of whom are recent immigrants to the United States.

The students come from around the world, Mexico, Tanzania, Burma, Sudan, and more. Like most students they are interested in playing soccer, learning about animals, and love art.

My Project

Many of my students reading one to two grade levels below the fourth grade. Time for Kids magazine will inspire them to read more and for meaning. The pictures in this periodical get the students attention and the topics (animals, cultures, current events) are relevant to their lives. The structure of the magazines also will be used as mentor text for their own writing. They will learn the importance of organizing paragraphs, and how to layout their reports to match their audience. The magazines are also a good way to bring their learning home and share with family members.

Donating towards our Time for Kids magazine subscription will help my fourth grade students become better readers and open up their world to a variety of cultures and topics that are relevant to them.

These magazines will increase their desire to read and increase their vocabulary. Another benefit of using a magazine subscription is that they can take them home and read them with family members. This provide another resource for reading materials at homes that have limited libraries.
