My students need books that get them excited about reading! Many of them have special needs or are reading below grade level, and often get discouraged about reading.

My Students
Do you remember that first book that got you really excited about reading? And then you just couldn't stop? I remember "Charlotte's Web", and the "Little House" series being part of that memory for me.
For many of my students, this moment hasn't happened yet, or reading is a struggle every day.
I am teaching in a Title 1 school.
Many of my students are students with special needs or are reading below grade level. They have dyslexia or related learning disabilities that make it difficult for them to read every day. Others are also fighting a constant battle with decoding and fluency. They are tired of reading texts that are below grade level, with simple plot lines and characters with whom they are unable to relate.
My students enjoy listening to read alouds, and talking about books in small groups or with a partner. They love using their imaginations, and hearing about characters that are like them, and encounter situations they can relate to.
Our school is willing to support our students, however, we don't always have the funds to purchase the materials to address all of their literacy needs. I have also already purchased some of these titles on my own, and had three boys move up in reading levels.
My Project
These books will be used for my students to read on their level for independent reading purposes, both in class and to take home in their book baggies.
Graphic novels will help to get my students more interested in reading. Although, some of the language may appear to be simple, graphic novels often contain characters that are relatable, and who encounter complex situations. Many of the other books contain super hero, action, or sports.
Many of my struggling readers are also boys. There has been much research done that says that boys are more behind in reading than females. According to the book, "Reading Don't Fix No Chevy's: Literacy in the Lives of Young Men" by Smith and Wilhelm, boys are more inclined to:
-read graphic novels and comic books
- read about hobbies, sports, and things they might do or be interested in doing
- to enjoy escapism and humor, and some boys are passionate about science fiction or fantasy
My hope is that through the purchase of these books, my students will finally find that spark that ignites a love of reading!
When it's time for book shopping, they will be some of the first students to race to the baskets in the classroom library, eager to choose a new book.
Thank you so much for your support for our classroom!
