This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach music (vocal, theory, and history) to a diverse group of music students at a Title I Visual and Performing Arts school in Los Angeles. Students come to our public high school from all over the city to receive a top-notch education in both academics and their chosen art form (music, dance, visual, or theater). Many of them go on to study at some of the top academic colleges and art schools across the country.

Our students are hungry for opportunities to explore music and to share their music-making with the world.

My Project

My students need a safe place to learn, to be themselves, and to be inspired. Unfortunately, my students currently live in a world where the message they receive daily is that the world is not safe--especially if your skin is a certain color, or if you look a certain way, or if you have grandparents that come from a different part of the world.

This project is about countering that message by creating an inspiring classroom space where my students feel safe, inspired, and proud to be themselves as they are sounded by positive images of of musicians and artists who have had to overcome similar circumstances as my students.
