My Students

Do you remember the excitement of choosing books from the library when you were in elementary school? Well, I have 25 eager 8 and 9 year olds who love picking the perfect book to read, both from the school library and from our classroom collection.

The third graders I teach live in a small, rural town.

They love performing science experiments at school and riding their bikes at home. One child raises chickens, while another spends the summer picking fruit. Our school is a high poverty school. The majority of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. The key to these students rising above their high poverty label is through education. If they can build and sustain a love for reading and learning, they can change their lives.

My Project

I want to encourage their love of reading and learning by having books that appeal to all interests from dogs, dinosaurs, and tornadoes, to humorous fiction books, to the classics. The students will be so excited to have new books to read! They'll snap them up, devour them, and eagerly share them with each other. All the while, they'll develop good reading skills and habits leading them to want to read more and more.

Having new books to add to our classroom collection will reinvigorate the kids' interest.

Plus, students arriving in third grade in the coming years will also reap the rewards of high interest books in our classroom.
