My kindergarten students come to school each day with big bright smiles and endless amounts of energy. I teach at a Title I school located in a small rural community in southern Oregon. Many students face social, economic, and emotional hardships which impacts their lives. However, my students are hard working eager learners who are making great academic progress despite these hardships. Students in my community depend on the stability and safety of our school from the hot nutritious meals served in the cafeteria to the kindness and compassion that is fostered in the school culture. I am proud to work among such dedicated teachers, support staff and volunteers who come together to make each day a success for each student.
My students love to learn, ask questions and use their hands to create.
Due to budget restrictions my school does not have the necessary art supplies to support early childhood learners.
My Project
My students need writing journals and hands-on art materials to develop early writing skills and inspire artistic expression. My project goal is to provide a meaningful and engaging connection of creating class writing journals while bonding families to their child's classroom learning. Project materials will encourage positive partnership building between families and students to promote academic achievement in class. The journals will be sent home with students and students will learn how to take ownership and pride in their writing and art as they share the journal with their families. Parents will have a dedicated day to sit with their child and read the journal together. Parents will have a portfolio of art and writing samples that will highlight their child's writing progress throughout the school year.
Kindergartners are natural writers and they are uninhibited in their ability to create and design art.
Project materials will be used in class during a guided writing workshop time. I will develop lessons that are aligned to kindergarten standards that address writing skills such as capitalization, spacing, punctuation and spelling. Students will express their creativity by exploring different art mediums including: ink pads, paint, crayons, watercolors and stencils to accompany their writing projects. The student journal includes blank artwork space to design stories, pictures and basic sentence writing.
A donation to this project will help my students strengthen their writing skills and integrate art into their classroom learning. Students will feel empowered and excited to share their academic success with their families in this weekly collaborative school to home opportunity.
