Inspiring Kindergarten Learners Through Science Exploration

Help me give my students firsthand exposure to fundamental science concepts by providing a science sensory table, ready-to-go learning centers, and other materials they can explore and engineer with!

My Project

In kindergarten, our students are exposed to literacy and math daily. Our students have so many literacy and math resources they can touch and work with on their own, but what about science? Currently, my science lessons consist of a video, a worksheet, or a mostly teacher-led experiment. And although students are learning and understanding, they do not have the opportunity for self-led experimentation and exploration. My DonorsChoose project would equip my classroom with a science sensory and exploratory station, as well as materials, to encourage curiosity and support student knowledge of fundamental science concepts.

With the implementation of my science sensory table, students will gain firsthand exposure to fundamental science concepts by touching, experimenting, and exploring with science materials.

Personal experiences gained from the science sensory table will cement my students’ science knowledge and create background knowledge they can recall during future school years. The exploring and experimentation happening at the sensory table will turn my students into problem-solvers as students work together honing their teamwork skills and learning how to collaborate. Patience, work ethic, and resiliency skills will be gained as well when students are met with a problem and multiple methods need to be tested before finding the correct solution. Crafting these skills will aid my students in their future classrooms, not only in science but in all subjects and even social/emotional situations.

I have eighteen students in my classroom whose science experiences will be elevated by the sensory table. Many of them are in a situation where science is a school word. Because of this, I want to ensure my students go beyond just talking about science. They experience it. With problem-solving and exploring skills sharpened, my students will go into their future classrooms better prepared for anything coming their way.
