Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyday my students walk down the hall and enter morning meeting with smiles on their faces, full of joy and excitement to learn. No matter what the situation is like for them at home they come with open eyes and ears ready to absorb new information and show what they have already learned.
The eagerness to learn each and everyday is what inspires me to bring my best for them each and every day.
These amazing kids come fro low socioeconomic neighborhoods and our school is 98% free and reduced lunch. They come to school hungry and ask if they can have snacks to take home with them at night. Many share their rooms with multiple siblings of all ages and have uniforms that have been passed down for multiple years.
They just want to have the same opportunity as anyone else and they deserve so much more than what they have.
My Project
My two classes of 25 1st graders use white boards and markers to practice math facts each and every day. They have become experts at passing out supplies and working together to help out the struggling students grasp difficult concepts. We work through new objectives and focus to master each concept.
We use a few outdated desktops to rotate students onto blended learning programs that reinforce skills and reteach key concepts that they need to master before moving on.
It often takes a few days to get every student through one rotation of the same lesson. This often leads to students working on lessons that they have already mastered or skills that no longer directly connect with the key objectives we are focused on.
With 4 more iPads (with cases and screen protectors) that function properly, we could greatly increase student retention and mastery of key objectives!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
