My Students
My students come from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and receive little enrichment outside of the classroom. I often need to explain simple words or concepts to them as we are reading and learning which involves an interruption of the learning process as I search for support materials.
Many of my ESL students come to my third grade classroom with little or no school experience.
Even those who have gone to school in the United States face the challenge of unstable home environments and non-English speaking parents, offering little support outside of the classroom.
My Project
My students are inquisitive learners and ask many questions, which I strive to answer as succinctly as possible. This sometimes involves searching for photos to clarify their understanding of a new word or crowding 26 students around 1 computer or book to share an illustration or article, which interrupts the flow of learning and sometimes frustrates my students. I have access to an ELMO, which will allow me to instantly project and share images with my students, but I need a multimedia projector to accompany it. I would also like to add beanbag chairs to our library to make it more inviting, so that students will be inspired to relax and read each day.
I view learning as the opportunity to nurture lifelong learners.
This is sometimes difficult to do with limited resources and struggling students. I hope to use the multimedia projector and beanbag chairs to create a classroom environment which students find enriching and inspiring.
