Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 7th and 8th grade students are about to venture into a literary world of latino culture, prose and personal experiences. Students in prevalent hispanic communities should have the opportunity to read literary works from other hispanic authors. Representation matters! The book called “The Distance Between Us” captures the memoirs of the young author, Reyna Grande's transition from living in an impoverished small town in Mexico, to moving to the United States. Many of my students' parents have experienced similar hardships that Grande endured during her assimilation into an entirely new culture, language, government system.
My students will write an expository essay on their own challenges.
Just like Reyna Grande, the students will use figurative language, including metaphors and smilies to write a compelling story of their strifes.
