Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine students fighting for books at the library because there just aren't enough? That's what my students go through on a weekly basis.
My students come from a low-income community in Los Angeles, and these 3rd graders have recently begun developing a love for reading, but we don't have the resources to make it happen.
The majority of my students are reading way below grade level, and as the state tests are vastly approaching, I'm hoping a revamp of our school materials will encourage them to persevere and meet their goals! This project will be an opportunity for my students to not only develop their love for reading, but to know that their education is valued in their community.
My Project
Imagine yourself reading with a book at home--do you picture yourself at a hard desk or a soft couch?
In the same way, I want my students to read like we do, relaxed and excited about escaping their harsh realities and into a heartfelt book.
I'm hoping that this new, organized classroom library will help them be more excited about checking out books and discovering a love for reading! The class set of cushions is to encourage students to enjoy their books the best way possible--relaxed, just like we as adults like to read at home! We don't have many shelves to store our books, and often because they're not organized well, students miss out on a lot of good books that are available to them. We also don't have any soft spaces for them to read and lounge at, so these cushions would provide a great experience for them to enjoy reading! I am hoping through these materials, we'll be able to cultivate life-long readers and learners!
