My Students
"It is a Great day to be alive", is how we start everyday here at Foster. We have great students who are eager to learn and take the next step in their educational travels. However, we have a long way to go to climb up due to our students inability to read on grade level.
Here at Foster we are 79% African American, 17% White, 4% Asian or Hispanic.
91% of our students are on Free or Reduced Lunch. In 2013 we scored in the bottom 1% of all elementary schools in Kentucky. However, last year we saw great improvements and are going to be one of the highest scoring schools in all of Kentucky within the next few years. We have students that are eager to grow and learn but just need some additional resources and structured interventions to help them overcome societal misconceptions to become successful readers. Over 50% of our school reads at least 2 levels below grade level which negatively affects all areas of their education. We are drastically changing this and with your help we will have 100% of our students reading on grade level.
My Project
Our students will be using the Ipad Mini's within Reading and Math intervention classes. These classes are designed to take students who have scored 2 grade levels below their grade on assessments and help them to get back on grade level. Interventions give them an opportunity to work in small groups with experienced teachers who can address the inconsistencies in the learning process that is holding the student back. We will use the Ipad Mini's in our technology centers which allow us to reduce the numbers the teacher is working with at one time, while giving the students the opportunity to complete research based instruction designed to accelerate the student back to their grade level within 2 years of intervention.
Data shows that if a student is not reading on grade level by 3rd grade they only have a 1 in 17, which is less than 6% chance of ever doing so.
This is why intervention is so important to us and our students. Last year on state assessments it showed that 56% of our students read below their grade level. We are designing an intervention program that will change this cycle that has been going on for years in our inner city schools. We invite you to help add to our arsenal to combat this.
